America is the main debater on the
topic of outsourcing. Many other countries,
the ones that companies are being outsourced to, rarely have a large input in
the debate. They’re benefiting from
increased employment, more money in their economy and are becoming more developed. However, Apurva Bose shares an Indian
perspective on the topic. Bose
candidly, using metanoias and antanagoges, sheds light on the dangers for the eager
workers that find only great opportunity in offshoring.
Throughout her article, Bose uses a
candid tone to address her audience. She keeps a neutral tone to balance the
pros and cons of outsourcing for both India and the US and Europe. After addressing
her turn down of an outsourced position because of the loss of talent in the position,
she then explains the enjoyment of many other job seekers who would gladly take
the position. Next she addresses the benefit
of the US’s and Middle East contracts then point out the US’s weakening dependency
on the Middle East as outscoring continues. She continues this tone to fulfil
her article’s title. She is giving an Indian perspective, not an extreme
nationalist Indian, not an uninformed Indian, not an Indian American perspective,
but an Indian perspective. Her writing isn’t filled with jargon, overwhelming
facts or a complexity. Her writing is straightforward. Her candid tone allows
her to deliver her claim more effectively, relaxing her audience and increasing
her chances of delivering a compelling argument.
Bose uses metanoias to primarily
qualify her statement. Adding positives
such as “I must say”, “but if you look closely at it”, “one might say”, “I don’t
whether to term it as”, address her way of thinking and thus strengthen her
statement. Without adding these, many readers may have questioned her expertise
and if she had enough evidence to truly say that the disparity of countries is
the reason for outscoring. And since this was an “Indian perspective”, many assumptions
where made and the metanoias boosted her boost her credibility. Readers are
more able to read and respect a writer that acknowledges their different way of
thinking and of lack of assurance before making a claim.
Bose fills her writing with reverse
antanagoges. Instead of balancing negative claims with positive benefits of outscoring,
Bose address the negative effects of outscoring and then adds advantages for
potential workers to balance her argument. For example, when first introducing her claim
she states outscoring “is a loss of talent loss of India and countries like
China and Philippines”. Rather than ranting on about this, she adds in the
benefits talents outsourced job workers can attain . With little training, one
can “take on the outscoring job”, help in the “incentive to those graduates
whose long term planning involves working abroad”. Rather than leaving the reader with an idea
that outscoring is all benefits for India, she adds the negatives to remind
readers that outscoring will hurt workers real
talents. Her Antanagoges lesson the reality and impact of outscoring effects
because after all, “outscoring is here to stay, to grow and to flourish”.
All her of rhetorical devices, her
candid tone, metanoias and reverse antanagoges, surprisingly, relate back to
her title; a Indian perspective. She gives a balanced argument as any citizen would
and acknowledges her way of thinking and lack of assurance to contain her “normal
Indian image”. Her creative, reverse antanagoges also add to the balancing of argument.
Together, Bose delivers her argument subtlety and effectively.

In
the game of business, China is becoming the dominant player at the cost of the
US. The US is seeing their companies leaving and joining China’s team. Many see this as a “foul play” and critique that
outscoring and offshoring is pulling employment from a country that is already
high in employment, is a strategy that businesses are using to hide their finances
from investors and promotes sweatshops. However, coincidentally we Americans call all the right people to complain
about this “then we hang up our Chinese-made phones and go shopping” (Cline).
Many rally to stop offshoring and outsourcing overseas but forget the daily necessities
we buy and use are in support of it. Many fail to also question, why do
companies prefer to have their business
functions done in other countries? Companies are not only offshoring to
decrease expenses, but prefer China to overcome the U.S.’s domestic restrictions of specific activities.
Global brands are taking up the opportunity to directly
outsource manufacturing to China and move their operations overseas. China
is the go-to country for outscoring and offshoring. 65 percent of China’s
revenues are from IT outscoring alone (Leach). Its software outsourcing park is
located in Dalian, with about 400 businesses that are expected to increase
sales to 20 billion Yuan annually. America’s recession is the main reason why companies
have moved overseas. Rough economic times forced business owners to cut down on
cost and as a result has boosted China’s sourcing market. The Chinese
government has made significant policy changes to extend this advantage and welcome
in businesses. The government offers businesses financial support, subsidies,
tax breaks, and intellectual property protection rights. China has also launched
a 2013 campaign against malpractices
and bribery. Even though this might be a burden to companies, those in compliance
can experience ethical business dealings with others and create a better
business environment nationally. The government’s active fight against corruption
is attracting investments and businesses. That is just one of the many
advantages to outsource or offshore to China.
Companies offshore to China to enter a new market. Galaxy Company
not only found it easier to be closer to their biggest group of customers but expanded
to China to compete in their market. A companies local presence in China,
allows the company to gain more local knowledge which is hard to attain with
the never ending disputes between China and the US. Companies are able to focus
on their companies because they aren’t caught up in the foreign relations of China
and the US. Instead of worrying whether their representative will be able to
actually fly to China or their shipments are up to par with the U.S.’s and China’s
shipping requirements, businesses can concentrate on core tasks. Their business
will not be affected by the countries’ world power battles.
Carrying
out research and company knowledge research in China is especially easy now, because
of “compelling regional language advantage and cost arbitrage” (Leach). There are
roughly 300,000,000 English learners in China and language is less of a problem
for businesses that want to offshore to enter a new market.
Companies offshore to gain access
to a new pool of talents. China has a more than 60% of high school graduates now attending
a university (NYT) and is soon to be the new Ivy League nation with the
largest higher-education sector in the world (Time Mag). With better educated
students, companies can get more efficient and qualified employees. Offshoring allows
companies to a better and large labor pool which may not be available locally
in the US.
The main incentive for companies
is no doubt, their profit but humans naturally sway to something with more advantages.
For certain companies, China’s hold more advantages in the world of business
and win their company as a result. America may need to stop playing the blame
game and actually present “advantages” to win back their companies to the US.

A Wah Yuh Nah Seh? - Patwa
Mi nuh tink seh unno really
undastand how curropt English really set up. Mi nah lie, mi neva get it eda but
tru Ms. Parham class, an d tings we read inna class , mi get ih. First of all, English
was set up by a bunch a white foriegnas . A nuh group ah white ppl mi a talk
bout eda . Bout tree ar 4 come togeda an seh “ we ago mek one language dat French
an Latin cah compete wid”. Dem did wah a language more “ pretigous” den dem
language deh. Dis did all start inna England doh. Den as time go on, ppl mek up
variations ah English. Dats why ppl inna Zimbabwe speak a different English den
d ppl dem inna India. But even inna America , dere is Black – English. D type a
English were African Americans dih create. It did sepret from d English d white
ppl dida chat in farin. Words like beat box, ain’t an bling; look dem up inna
one dictionary and mi bet seh yuh neva woulds find dem. Yuh wan know why? Cah dem ppl who mek d
dictionary , mek sure dem language nuh inna ih. Dem mussi tink seh dem words,
some how ago degrade English, mek ih unprestigous, make ih less worthy, mek it
ordinary like any oda language.
So yuh eva wonda why when yuh deh a
uptown st. Andrew some ppl act stoosh wid dem propa English, why some teacha
neva wouldla answa yuh question if yuh nuh asks “properly”, why people look pon
u like seh dem and u neva go ah di same school when yuh start twang inna government place like d bank? English set up
dat way. Set up fi mek everyone, every language , every word oda den Standard English
inferior. Mi nuh know why sum ppl ah
fight ppl inna JA when a likkle pickey a talk dat raw bawn patwa compared to an uptown gyal which a talk like seh she
did live a America all har life when boat ah dem raise inna di sam parish, inna
d same ghetto an d same hardships. People really as use patwa to furda mek
social class distinctions and oppresss dem owna ppl.
Believe it or not, mi neva start chat patwa
until 2011 (Thanks to a special someone). Yes, imma Jamaican -America but I love
patwa. The attitude behin ih , the words ,acrynoms for simple tings and di
rhtym of d language. Like wen mi mada deh a market an a sell sum tings from
farin, who would tink seh di word “ ray ray “ cah describe simple clothing.
Even when sum likkle pickney a fool round wid each other and scream out “ ahhh
bayyyy”!!. Ar when a guy approach yuh wid a lean an whisper lyrics inna yuh ear,”
mi luv how yuh roun up an nice, mi caah get a minute a yuh time?”. All dem
tings deh jus mek me happy inside and mi not even bawn a Jamrock. Mi a jus an outsider lookin in and admiring d
language. (Talkin bout language, yuh kno seh it surprise me dat patwa is not an
official language because some lingolist seh so. A foolishness dat doh, cah dat
nah stop mi from tell di world mi a bi-lingual) .
People really a
figet wah Jamaica did guh tru and even doh d parliament mash up, world boss deh
a jail and roads cah neva seem fi fix, wi all can undastand an liberate inna
one ting.Patwa. Doh let dem English ppl tell yuh seh yuh accent is vulgar , is illegitimate,
is obscure. Tell dem seh dere language is vulgar, illegitimate , is obsure cah
dem language only come from ppl who mek ih up, patwa is a living language from strugglers
for freedom. To chat patwa allows mi to connect
wid oda Jamaicans, to be included in d culture and be “ one out of many people”,
even doh mi bawn a foreign. So imagine wah ih coulda do if all people could
liberate inna it. Mi jus hope dat many odas coulda feel dis way. Feel just as
proud, happy and liberated to chat patwa and not look down pon ih . cah when
yuh look down pan patwa like seh it a one unintelligent language, u a tek side
wid d same white man dat look down pon yuh ancestors and tell dem seh dem not
even human. Tink bout dat.
( For those struggling to understand my thesis here, it was
that Jamaican Patwa ,which is a dialect of English, and other dialects of English
should embrace their languages and not
use it to differentiate social classes in countries. Someone who doesn’t speak Standard English
should not be seen as unintelligent and deficient because they are speaking the
language of their culture. When one looks down on their own language because it
is not the “prestigious” Standard
English, you are taking sides with the same white man that may have looked down
on your ancestors and told them they weren’t even human.)
Thank you.

Is writing of any sort playing a role
in this conflict? Is it?
On January 25,
2013 Ukrainian Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara addressed the Permanent Council
of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. He told the 57 nation
representatives present that one of the Ukraine priorities was going to be
media freedom. This gave hope to media freedom advocates in Ukraine and around
the world. Everyone was ready a bright and better future in free media
and speech.
Now, that
was only a year ago and look where the Ukraine stands now. Protest against
Yanukovich’s agreement with Russia has turned once peaceful protest into riots
against government officials. Riots have lashed out in Keiv because of new laws
that were passed to stifle protests. The government had set draconian laws that would
“prohibit almost any protest, curtail freedom of speech, hobble the press,
enable the government to ban citizens from using the Internet and classify
advocacy groups as “foreign agents” if they receive money from abroad.” (WashingtonPost)
Anyone,
anywhere would react to this, especially Ukrainians that are slowing seeing a
dictatorship form in their country. This
law was presented a Thursday and signed into law by Yanukovych late Friday. That
Friday gave authorities “far-reaching power to outlaw most forms of protest.”
So, yes,
writing is literally playing a role in this conflict; the press, individual speech
and public propaganda is being curtailed by the government. But the most important
role in this conflict in Ukraine are the citizen; the ones that actually write,
fight and die for the freedom for their opinion to be heard.
Ukrainians
take pride in Ukraine and their independence from big power like Russia. They
don’t want to return back to Russia. Neither do they want Yanukovyc to
copy the methods of Russian and slowly turn into a dictator. But, sadly for
them, it seems too late. Yanukovych has
totally forgotten parliamentarism , passed an anti-democratic law which and
seems to work to forget all the democratic progress the Ukraine made in the past
, which not to forget, citizens urged for.
A
leader should represent his people but what is Yanukovyc doing now? Instead of
actually listening to protester and knowing what their big hullabullo is about,
he rather quiet and oppress them. Yes Yanukoyc that is exactly what a great
leader should do.
So, to
all you news companies that mostly cover America’s potential involvement, Russia
power, Crimea’s invasion and Europe’s position, we are forgetting to hear the
opinions of the citizens of Ukraine. They are the ones actually living in the
country, they are the ones who are affected by Ukraine’s every decision and the
one who may or may not live to tell the next generation of this conflict.
Citizens are rioting and uprising against government because they want a say,
they want their voices heard, and they want their freedom of press and speech. Ukraine
citizens play the biggest role in their conflict and could play the biggest
role in the resolution. It’s hard to believe Ukrainians are protesting only for
meaningless self-fulfillment.

This picture could be my thesis.
I could stop my blog right here. . .
But, I won’t, don’t worry.
Toni Morrison has embedded metaphors in her writing that are used to compare against plot situation in her book. The comparison between the metaphor and the plot makes the story even more dramatic and the events devastating. In the Bluest Eye, a big metaphor was the Dick and Jane story. Dick and Jane are siblings, they are white, they have a family; they had the perfect life. Morrison included this text from a Dick and Jane Story: “Here is the house. . . It’s very pretty. Here is the family. Mother, Father, Dick and Jane live in the green and white house. They are very happy. . . . See mother .Mother is very nice. . .See father. He is big and strong. Father is smiling” They live the perfect white picket fence American dream. They have an unrealistic stable and happy family. They have a daughter with a cute little dress and happy parents.
This is the same type of “dream”
that the community of Lorain, Ohio upheld in the Bluest Eye; a stable family, good children
and a non-problematic household . Lorain, Ohio had their own rendition of a
‘dream’ family that was - a good Christian woman, who and the hardworking man
that provided for his family, and well rounded, presentable children.
Now, Pecola comes into this.
She is the opposite in everything that make a well-rounded family.
Her mother physically abused, her father is a drunk and her brother is
always ready to run away. On top of that, Pecola is the victim of
insult, ugly, poor and the negative adjectives can go on and on.
The community looks down on her for
who she is, because they truly don't know her at all. Why do only a
two people in the whole book seem sympathetic for her? Her own father raped her
for goodness sake and the baby died as well! It’s not as if she wanted to have
his child, be raped and have the worst fortune. Not to forget, she had to leave
school and no one even looks her in the eye. Repeating the Dick and
Jane story in the beginning and using versus as chapter title, continual remind
the reader this story is significant to make Pocola’s misery stand out.
Readers can true see Pecola’s life is nothing close to the life of Dicks
and Jane.
Another thought is that Morrison is
using the Dick and Jane metaphor, not to encourage us to remember our history,
but to help remind society to understand and remember someone’s history.
People should try to understand, to know to, and to take the time to know
someone’s past before we turn our eyes from them. Forgetting to truly
grasp and understand someone’s history, from their point of view, before
judging them is dangerous for society. Who wants to live in an
inconsiderate world?
Morrison encourages us to not be the
kind of society that judges by appearance and surface facts but to consider
that person past and personal know their history because it could change our outlook.
Take Cholly for example, he raped
his daughter but he didn't know how to show love to his daughter because he had
no parent to show him. Soaphead church was lonely with no wife, a
depressing childhood as well and found no pleasure in woman or man, so he
resulted in children, he never hurt them though. Does knowing the
past of someone change how you look at them and their actions? I
think so.
Don’t judge
what you don’t understand. Then, when you understand, judging won’t
even be pertinent.

Redone -The Wrong way to Attack Obesity
My first response to this ad was “what? You are a
little girl. You don’t seem as you’re 13 or older?” Then, your eyes stare into the
girl’s weary eyes, your eyes move downward her bloated body, edited for a
gloomy yet serious effect. Your eyes are automatically drawn to the bold red font
that is hard to miss against the black and white edit; “WARNING…” I stare harder
into the little girls eyes once more and BOOM! It hit me. This ad was a play on
words, she really isn’t a “little” as in petite girl, she is obese and a”
bigger than her age” girl. But, what really shocked me was this WAS a Stop
Obesity campaign.
The little girl crosses her arms in frustration
because she truly is not a “little” girl. This ad, a part of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta’s
campaign, aims to shock parents into action. Unhappy, ill-fated, bullied faced
and overweight children are being used to have an emotional impact on parents.
The little
girl crosses her arms in frustration because she truly is not a “little” girl. Her
depressed expression resembles one of a bullied child that can’t stand up to their
bully. So if this girl can’t stand up to bullying comments of her not being a “little
girl”, who will stand up for her? This is the question that CHA wanted to arise
in the viewer’s minds. Parents are to blame. This ill-faced girl can’t stand up
for herself; she can’t buy the healthiest foods, she can’t proportion her food,
and include exercise in her life systematically, because she is a child. Therefore
CHA pressures parents to take responsibility to control their child’s health
and make them the “little girl” they should be.
This ad presses obese
kids to think their appearance is their parents fault. They will turn to
parents and ask why am I fat? All the blame is now on parents for not making
their child look like a socially accepted “little girl”. Well Children’s
Healthcare of Atlanta, I also guess it’s the parents fault this child will get
bullied everyday by another careless child for her big body. It’s the parent’s
fault an obese child will lose less and less self-confidence because of the
comments, other “little girls” make about her. It’s the parents fault an obese
child will take their life to no longer deal with society’s pressure to be that
“little girl”. Reversing obesity should start with approaching the patients’
health, daily activity, and consumption, not their appearance and who’s to
blame.
This ad is just doing
more harm than good. The ad doesn’t focus on ways to reverse obesity but
rather adds to the social stigma of what everyone should look like. Yes the
girl isn’t little in size; people may call her fat and big. But if she is obese,
her main issue is having too much fat on her body. Overweight doesn’t necessarily
equal obese. Obesity means having too much body fat. Targeting how to get rid
of this fat should be the main objective of this ad. Not size, shape or outward
appearance of the child. Why degrade the size of a child because it’s not what
all little girls look like? Look inward, fix the fat.

to have an impact on parents. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s goal is to
first get parents aware their children are in fact obese. Shame, shocking statistics, and scare
tactics are all a part of this campaign
to get some attention to this issue.
I have a few questions to ask though. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, why aren’t you
advocating a healthy lifestyle for these children and parents? Offering
solutions and changes to incorporate in the children’s lives to actually start
seeing results in the state? Why attack the insecurity of obese children, the
one insecurity that that society bashes everyday whether someone is obese or
not. Why?
This ad presses obese

characters perceive Jamaicans to children that watch The Little Mermaid, What
were children gaining when watching TV ads attacking their interest during their
shows and why is there a lack of the happy ever after interracial couples on
children and teen shows?
The answers to the question
can be argued forever but altogether I learned that each producer had an
intention and through their shows and ads I learned more about the society I live
in.
This society is still
stuck in the past. The past that includes racial stereotypes, strict profit incentives
and same race couples. These producers and society fail to realize that we are
in the 2014. We've come a long way and
society fails to acknowledge that . We fail to see that stereotypes were
challenged when a white man killed an innocent young black boy. We fail to see
that money isn’t and fail to see that the Federal Marriage Amendment was never
passed and being the same race doesn't assure love.
Some inequities I say
were the jokes that were poked insensitively at Sebastian the Crab and more views
of other characters in the movie. The only two colored character in the book
were animals and sea creatures. And they weren't perceived as smart and
productive but rather foolish and servants.
Food companies advertise “low fat” fun , attractive , catchy and bright colored
snacks to children that still contain high levels of sugar and sodium but
forget they are adding to the children’s want for unhealthy food. They are
adding to America’s obesity problem and aren’t acting to better society.
The lack of interracial couples on TV shows, show the
inequality compared to same race couples. They are rare to see and TV and when
seen, they are portrayed odd. Producers will never write their shows to include
an interracial couple falling in love the cliche way and I just want to know
why.
Once again, all of these ideas were portrayed through media.
Media may be a very sly medium where people can let out their opinions. Instead
of talking publicly, passing pamphlets or making direct change to a problem,
producers are letting their opinions and view seep into their work. The little
Mermaid probably was produced by a racial joker who inserts stereotypes just
for laughs. TV producers only have the incentive for money instead of concern
for children that they are leading to be obese. And TV show producers either don’t
support interracial couples are want to risk anything towards their show to
include some.
Now that I have looked around me, I will continue to point
out these small observations to others. They may disagree or agree with me but
I will not let others pass in my life without knowing what the Media could be
teaching children and us. At least they will be aware of the many opinions that
people still hold today and fail to leave behind in the past.

You Will Only Date Within Your Race
You don’t
normally choose the person you’ll fall in love with but ask ABC family and Disney
channel and you’ll only be in relationship of your own race.
Let’s be
honest , how many interracial relationship have you seen on Disney, Cartoon Network,
Nickelodeon or ABC family? This has been my longer term observation. From 1997 –
2004, I noticed…
·
Mickey
Mouse dates Mickey Mouse; another Mouse
·
Cinderella
and her Prince; both white.
·
Aladdin and Jasmine ,
both Arabian
·
Mulan & Shang – Asian Decent
·
Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Harvey
Same race couples on television continue currently…
·
Ally and Austin
·
Baily and Cody
·
Jeremy and Candice
·
Teddy
Duncan and Spencer Walsh
·
Mellissa
and Joey
Where
are the interracial couples? The lack of interracial couples reflects Production
companies’ bias. They are stuck on specific
portrayals of relationships being within a race. Why doesn’t Mickey Mouse like
Daffy Ducks family members? Why did Sabrina have a crush on the popular white
jockey? Don’t you think kids are developing some kind of idea that “I should
only like people who look like me”? Maybe that is what producers what, they
want to keep the social norm of same race couples.
Then when there are interracial couples, they are perceived
differently. While the same race couples follow the cliché story plot, of a
meeting at a similar place, a date, kiss, and steady relationship interracial
couples meet because one likes the other and the other doesn’t even notice their
existence. They awkwardly meet and try to overcome the awkward talks and interactions
and both fall in love for each other’s flaws.
Is including interracial couples in shows step towards a real
representation of real love stories/ relationships ? More people can say that
they met their partners from a incidentally run in rather then they caught eye
contact at the local Starbucks and continued to come every day to see each
other. You’ll also notice "While white women in interracial relationships
came across as either morally corrupt or socially inept or as victims of
physical or sexual abuse, women of color who become involved with white men
were often presented as erotic, exotic and possessing exceptional
talents." (B****Magazine)
To think
of it, the TV and Media market is about getting the most popularity and best
rating. If the number one show is Scandal, featuring the most interesting couple
of a black woman and white man, wouldn’t you think that someone other producers
would be taking thought?
Child Obesity caused by TV ads, not the TV.
Obesity is the main concern for the next generation and we
all know it will be hard to entirely eliminate TV out of the modern child’s
life. Therefore, you’d only allow your child to sit and watch 30 minutes of Nickelodeon.
Nothing is wrong with that, right? Sorry
to say but more junk food companies are attacking children in their marketing.
No longer is the activity of TV watching only decreasing health but the
advertisements are advocating it.
Nickelodeon, the channel that annually has their Day of Play, to encourage kids to turn off
the TV and play outdoors all day, has about 4 junk food commercials out of 6
that typically show during a 3 min commercial break in between shows. Cartoon
Network and Disney Channel repeat the same ads. With about 3 commercial breaks
during 30 mins shows, that equal approximately, 12 junk food companies
screaming at your children to buy their product. An unhealthy lifestyle of unhealthy foods is being
taught to our kids.
These companies know exactly what they are doing, but fail
to really say “we’re advocating obesity”.
While watching Nickelodeon for a half an hour you’ll see…
1. The McDonald logo dance across the screen and a
7 years olds run to grab a happy meal and tear apart a chicken nugget. In the background
you will see his father smiling. Why? Because
the Happy Meal has apple slices and Low fat milk. The too simple addition to
the 640 calories meal, magically make the meal desirable to guardian and the
child is happy as well.
2.
The Lucky Charms leprechaun is being chased to
the end of a cliff by 4 kids. A bowl of lucky charms are dangling at his arms
and the kids manage to grab it from him while he falls of the cliff. The Kids
run with the bowl singing of the glorious shapes, colors and delight of the marshmallow
for their breakfast. Then a operator at the end of the commercial repeats “part
of a healthy breakfast”.
3.
The Trix rabbit is also being chased for his yogurt
cups by a group of 8 year olds. The kids capture the bunny and the cup and
repeat their famous line with a twist. “You silly rabbit, Trix are for kids and
with a light up spoon!” If you thought that your kids finally gave up on the 14
grams artificially flavored yogurt, you thought wrong once again. They’ll be
running back to try ever flavor of the yogurt to find a light up spoon and
collect all four!
4.
A group of second graders converse in a lunch room.
One girl pulls out her Lunchabales. Everyone is preoccupied eating their homemade
lunch. The girl opens the Lunchables and a radiant light shines on her face as
she is flabbergasted to see that her lunchables now has laffy taffys and Oreos.
Everyone crowds over her shoulders to stop and stare at the glorious sweets.
With their techniques and continuously rerunning commercials,
junk food companies have young children under their spell. Don’t be surprised
when you see you child pleading and filling your shopping cart with the unhealthiest
of the unhealthiest.
Don’t even get me started on the Krusty Krab Burgers and ice cream
variations that appear in every episode of SpongeBob and all the characters devotedly
enjoy.
Sebastian from "The Little Mermaid"
Who doesn’t love Disney movies? Especially the old and
classic ones that never grows old? The songs, the magic and happiness just make
the youthful side of anyone come out. Taking a closer look at Sebastian in The
little Mermaid, raises some questions. Sebastian is the red Jamaican crab
in the 1989 Disney version of The Little Mermaid. He is the servant of
King Triton and also under King Tritons demand to accompany and follw Ariel on
land. The character, Sebastian was made only for the film, and was not from the
original Hans Christian Andersen story. In the original story Sebastian was
originally Clarence an English-butler crab. Howard Ashman, the songwriter
proposed changing Clarence to a Jamaican Rastafarian crab. Doing so, the music
was changed to fit the crabs’ nationality.
Specifically in Sebastian’s popular , Under the Sea song , Disney portrays something. Imagine a Red
Jamaican crab persuading Ariel to stay under the sea because “the human world
is bad” , “ a mistake”, she’d have to “slave on land” and altogether work. Don’t
believe me? Take a look at the lyrics of the song…
Up on the shore they work all day
Out in the sun they
slave away
While we devotin'
Full time to floatin'
Under the sea!
If it takes a whole song to exaggerate a better life under
the sea, Disney may be trying to highlight something bigger. Children see that
this crab is funny, laid-back, musical and party-loving and will subject this
to Jamaicans. But then they also will see that this crab is lazy, reluctant to
work, unproductive, and subject that to Jamaicans as well. Sebastian loves
being under water because he won’t have to work or get a job unlike live on
land.
Disney may have added this character as inspiration from the
highlight of the time the movie was being produced. The Rastafarian movement
was becoming more publically known around the 1970s; especially gaining
attention and new followers from the great, Bob Marley. Rastafarians have a
loosely structured and liberal belief that would reflect Sebastian’s languor.
The most controversial practice of Rastafarians is the use of cannabis, the
religious use of marijuana, is the holy herb, Iley or callie, and is given by
God. It is used in rituals called reasonings, when Rastas sit around and smoke
the marijuana and discuss. Marijuana is believed to free the mind and soul.
Other practices are the growth of dreadlocks and an ital diet. Hair is grown a
dread to represent the roots of Africa, a lion’s mane and a lion strength and
connection to Africa. Rastafarians are down to earth people that see Africa as
the mother land and heaven on earth.
But despise their intention with Sebastian as a character or
where they may of gotten their influence from nevertheless, there were only 2 “colored”
character in the movie in including Sebastian. Kids learn no diversity but also
the wrong impression of a certain races.

Ownership promt
According to Merriam Webster Dictionary,
the word own, pronounced ˈōn\, a verb, means to have (something) as property,
to legally possess (something) or to admit that something is true. One would
like to go deeper than the dictionary’s definition though. To own means to have
full control over something, tangible or tangible; taking upon the
responsibility for it.
In life you have the opportunity to
own stock in a company. You may put 5000 dollars into a company; meaning you’re
buying $ 5000 worth of that company so that you may hopefully get to
participate in their long term success. Out of free will, you put down the
money to invest and are given a receipt of purchase. In your hand is the evidence
that you now own a $5000 worth of that company. You have full control with your
money. You may add more, remove the stock, sell it, and divide it into
different shares. The company has no complete control to force you to keep your
money in the company or to use it in a different way unless you have a special
restrictive plan hindering the percentage in the company you own. The same thing goes when you buy a car. Its tangible,
the car shop has given you your files, a receipt and the keys. Unless you are
in a contract or have a restriction with the car shop, the stock and share is
yours to own. Receipts literally say ‘You gave us the full amount of money to
buy this object. We give up this item for exchange. Now, you own the item, we
own your money.’ To own, there has to be an exchange and tangible evidence to prove
the exchange. To own, the giver must give up the total percentage of the item (tangible
or not). The receiver must give up, in exchange, something of equal amount; simultaneously
giving up full control and complete authority.
In exchange both sides are
benefited. The item or worth lost, is fully restored back with the equally worth
exchange that has taken place. What happens next? Each side now has the responsibility
for their item. The company is not obligated to control your stocks worth, for
selling it, or for not making it grow as fast as you like. Having full ownership
of a stock with evidence to show you purchase means you are responsible for
actions going forward. If stock prices are falling, sell the stock. If stock
prices are rising you may buy more. The company may advice and influence your
stock decision but it your actions that would go forward to make actual change.
Your stock, your money, your responsibility; unless, the first owner didn't give
up their full ownership of the object.
Same thing goes for owning a car.
Once all necessary papers are handed over, whose responsibility is it to fuel
the car, repair damages, pay insurance? They are all the owners’ full responsibilities
unless the owner signed a lease, signed a special plan for included car
insurance or a plan that the company will supply free oil changes. In that case
the car isn't yours fully; you do not own the whole car. You rely on the company
of insurance, or oil changes and they no longer are your full responsibility.
If you take up a full plate of food, it’s yours. But if u takes up half the
plate and another person takes up the half, who plate is it truly? Full ownership
consists of taking full responsibility of an object, all responsibility.
Two concepts define ownership; a complete
exchange and full responsibility of an object. One gives so that you may receive
and vice versa. Once that is done, responsibly
is granted unto the receiver. Everything that you do, happens or exerted with
the object is up to your discretion. Therefore, only bite off what you can
chew.
